This week, President Donald Trump supporters broke into a chant of “Send her back!” when he started to attack Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) during his MAGA rally in North Carolina, sparking widespread backlash.
In the face of harsh criticism from left and right, Trump tried to save face by claiming that he was “not happy” with the racist chant only to contradict himself by praising his supporters as “incredible patriots” for wanting him to deport Omar.
“Those people in North Carolina — that stadium was packed, it was a record crowd, and I could have filled it ten times, as you know,” Trump said during an Oval Office event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. “Those are incredible people, those are incredible patriots.”
Trump sparked uproar when he told Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”
The four women of color are American citizens, and Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, and Tlaib were all born in the United States. Trump has been widely condemned for invoking a racist trope against the members of Congress. Nevertheless, he has continued to attack them, especially Omar, all week.
