Following a day of emotionally wrought testimony, Senate Republicans on Friday advanced Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation on a party-line vote. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake (R) voted “yes” in support of Kavanaugh. But anxiety and confusion struck Republicans when Flake retreated to an ante room off the hearing chamber with Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, where he remained secluded for nearly an hour.
Early Friday, Flake committed to supporting Kavanaugh, but appeared to regret his decision as the morning went on.
The Arizona Republican emerged from the ante room and addressed the committee, where he announced that he will vote to forward the nomination to the floor with the understanding that the FBI conducts an investigation of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.
Grassley then decided to abruptly end the meeting. This left many people in the room confused, including Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) who yelled at Grassley, “What?!”
